On 4 September 2026, staff from the IfG set out to follow the trail of water, exploring the Rammelsberg visitor mine in Goslar.The special guided tour through the mine – which is over 1,000 years old and located in what was once Europe’s most important non-ferrous metal deposit – followed the path of the water from the Herzberg pond through the Röderstolln tunnel, designed by Oberbergmeister Johann Christoph Röder, right into the mine.
For several years, the IfG has been studying the Maceió cavern field in Brazil, where, amongst other things, significant subsidence and a sinkhole have occurred. A detailed analysis of the geomechanical mechanisms and processes has now been published in two articles in the specialist journal Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering.
With 11 colleagues—about one-third of our workforce—we took part in this year’s Leipziger Firmenlauf. Together with about 22,000 other runners, we competed in the 5km race as “Team Salzhasen” in warm summer weather and achieved some impressive personal results.
